We have already discussed some of the top attractions in Tampere, let's look at five culinary dishes that are must-try while in Finland. As a note, there are more than five exciting dishes this country has to offer, however, we have tried to narrow it down to five of the most exciting ones we could find.

  • Karjalanpiirakka (rice pies)

These are some of the most popular pastries in Finland. They are made with the countries famous rye bread and filled with rice porridge (think rice pudding) and topped with egg butter. This is served for almost any occasion such as breakfast, snack, dessert, and even high-class functions such as weddings.

  • Leipajuusto (bread cheese)

Known as "squeaky cheese" to Finnish natives, this mouth-watering dish is very similar to Halloumi or or grilling cheese. This cheese is quite squeaky and rubbery once it cools off, but fresh out of the oven it is pliable and even somewhat melty. It has a simple, yet delightful salty taste. and pairs well with any kind of jam or even honey or fruit.

  • Korvapuusti (cinnamon buns)

This sweet treat is billed as a step above the traditional American cinnamon rolls. Things like a heavy use of cardamom is what sets these apart from the cinnamon rolls we know and love.

  • Lihapullat (Finnish meatballs)

These meatballs are quite similar to their Swedish counterparts, only they are less saturated with spices and herbs. They are made with a curd cream and served with gravy and frequently served with lingonberry jam as well.

  • Poronkaristys (sauteed reindeer)

This dish may sound odd to American ears, but it is delicious nonetheless. It is made with thinly sliced Reindeer steak that is fried in fat and spiced with a simple mixture of salt and pepper. It is cooked in either cream or beer in order to make it tender as well as to add extra flavor. This dish is served over mashed potatoes and also comes with lingonberry jam.

As noted in the beginning, there are many wonderful, must-try dishes from Finland, but hopefully this wets your appetite.
