Being the longest tenured Columbus Blue Jacket, Matt Calvert has seen it all. He has also seen a rotating cast of linemates through the years. None of it is new for the small winger; he is used to it at this point.
Skating with a newly acquired player may be a challenging but Calvert doesn't see it that way. Forward Jussi Jokinen skated on a line with Calvert and Nick Foligno
"It was good," said Calvert during media availability before the team left for Las Vegas. "Obviously, you play with a guy that you've gone and had a morning skate with, you don't have a ton of feel, but you know, I thought our first period was good."
Playing 18 minutes against the Dallas Stars, Calvert can be trusted with plenty of ice time. He was one shift short of his highest amount of shifts for the year. This is all while giving him the most defensive zone starts of his long career.
"It's the little things," stated Calvert. "It's funny, you know when I first came in here, you know, you're playing with all the old guys and all the veterans, you don't know what to expect. But now, you know, I usually have a first or second-year guy on your line every game. It was good. It was good to play with two older guys."
Injured players have put the lineup in flux and have placed players in much more important positions. This includes the oft-injured Calvert. He is on pace to have his second most games played in his entire career.
"It'll be cool. It'll be our first experience. Obviously, we do it once a year with them (Vegas Golden Knights) being in the west. We got some former teammates out there. You know when they get back in town maybe we get a chance to see them before the game. It's going to be our first kick at it; it should be a good go, we want to get a win."
