The Columbus Blue Jackets loss to the Washington Capitals continued a four-game losing streak for the team. Most importantly, it meant that the team lost two points against a divisional rival.
Defenseman Seth Jones spoke to the media post-game and showed frustration while also getting across that there were improvements. Jones led all defenseman in shots on goal with six.
"We played a hard game tonight," said Jones. "You see the importance of every play. Against a team like this (Capitals), with 45 seconds left we can't blow a defensive coverage like that. So I feel these last two games, we've kind of thrown away some points."
In a close game, Jones did all he could to make sure that the Blue Jackets came out ahead. Playing well over five minutes between the powerplay and penalty kill, Jones was a jack of all trades. In total, Jones played 27:31 leading both teams in time on ice.
While his play has been up to par, Jones also believes that the team as a whole is taking proper steps as well.
"We're playing a lot better," said Jones when asked about the style of play. "We're being more physical; we're hunting pucks a lot more. Our D are more aggressive up the ice I think. It was something we really needed to get back to, pinching more on the forecheck. So as a D core, I don't think we're giving up many chances."
As the Blue Jackets fight for playoff position, improvement will be crucial, as the team has shown they're getting back to their average level of play. The hope is that they can take it to the level they crave. With it, they can no longer leave it in their goaltender's hands to save the day.
"Bob (goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky) played a great game, and we put him in a tough spot there in the last minute."
