Head Coach John Tortorella: "You Can't Grow Until You Go Through Some Struggles"

The Columbus Blue Jackets are up against it, and that is no secret. The team needs to string together wins. Along the way, it isn't unheard of to look internally at the struggles and failures the team has and grow from them. It is a concept Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella is keenly aware of as the team continues to find it's game.

He even used a recent example involving the Super Bowl to illustrate his point. Primarily, he centered in on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.

"I'll tell you, I listened to the quarterback, Foles, and it's a subject that we're right in, right now the way he talked," Tortorella said. "You cannot learn, you can't grow until you go through some struggles, and go through some of this stuff here. And that's the definition of (resilience), how you come out on the other end."

While the resilience is vital and the growth is necessary, until the results bear out the process, it will be tough in the locker room. The team and the coaches know where they stand. Trusting the process is essential, but it needs to turn into points.

"You pick up the standings today, we're right in the middle of it," Tortorella said. "That's where we're going to look to the next day. I'm going to show 'em stuff (Thursday), as far as some of the things that I think we're getting more consistent at, as I've talked about some inconsistencies with our team, and just get it ready for our next game."

One of the great moments was when Ellie Maetzold, daughter of Fox Sports Ohio's Dave Maetzold asked a question to Tortorella about why the nets were close together during practice. It revealed the tenor of the practice more than anything, giving a real sense of the team's mindset as they go into another battle against the Washington Capitals on Friday.

"Great question, We usually don't," said Tortorella. "But today we just wanted to let them have some (fun) …we played games today. Usually, in our regular practice, they are in their same spots, and it's usually a boring practice of working on stuff we are supposed to work on. Today, we wanted to have some fun, so we moved them up and played some games with them."
