During the first period, Riley Sheahan scored only a 1:41 into the game, and it was a sign of everything to come. It was followed up with a Brian Dumoulin goal for the Penguins and only six and a half minutes into the game; the Penguins were up 2-0.
The Blue Jackets would show a bit of fight when forward Artemi Panarin would put Columbus on the board making it at the time a 2-1 game. Just under two minutes later, Sheahan would score again to make it a two-goal game again.
The second period would put the Penguins up by three when Zach Aston-Reese found a rebound and hammered it home. Not much action after the first period was an up and down affair. The score was 4-1 entering the second intermission.
At the beginning of the third period, a pass from Boone Jenner found Alexander Wennberg, and they were able to get the game back to 4-2. With just under six minutes remaining in the third period, Penguins forward Jake Guentzel extends the lead to 5-2.
The Blue Jackets would push back some in the third period as they racked up plenty of shots but didn't have any more goals to show for it after scoring early.
