Andrew Cassels, a former Columbus Blue Jacket who spent 16 years in the NHL, has stuck around the Columbus area since his playing days concluded. Now, he's diving back into the city's hockey scene in a different capacity.
Per a release from the university, the 49-year-old former center will be an associate coach for Ohio State's women's hockey program this season.
From Ohio State's press release:
“Andrew brings a ton of great experience to the table,” OSU Head Coach Nadine Muzerall said. “He’s a wise hockey player, and has a certain charisma that will help him get off on the right foot with the team. Our players that worked with him over the summer sang his praises, and he impressed our captains when they met with him. Andrew is a great fit for our culture, we’re fortunate that he was in our backyard and able to jump in quickly.”
The position at Ohio State is on an interim basis and is his first foray into coaching since his 2011-12 stint with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones.
Cassels retired from the NHL having played in 1015 games and had 732 points over the course of his career.
