As the Ottawa Senators' season continues to go down the tubes, trade rumors are beginning to percolate. A name that has been brought up by a prominent NHL insider has ties to the Blue Jackets.

You guessed it, it's Derick Brassard.

1st Ohio Battery wrote about the possibility earlier in the week and thought it would be a natural fit for a team looking for center depth. The Senators are definitely going to be sellers. Why not bring back a known commodity that can pack a scoring punch?

Here is what Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman had to say in his weekly 31 thoughts column:

Idea that might make sense only to me: Columbus, looking for a centre, considering a reunion with Derick Brassard. Brassard and John Tortorella worked well together with the Rangers. You know who Tortorella’s assistant was there? Mike Sullivan. And the Penguins are looking for a centre, too.

It won't be willed into existence, but there are many factors that allow this scenario to make sense.

Brassard is signed to one more season after 2017-18 and would then be an unrestricted free agent. Considering the window that the Blue Jackets have put themselves into, the length of the commitment is sensible.

In 31 games this season, Brassard has 20 points including eight goals and 12 assists to put him at a solid pace. He is already going to surpass last season's mark.

Brassard brings an average annual value (AAV) of $5 million a year, but comes with a cap hit of $3.5 million. This info comes courtesy of Cap Friendly.
