Another day, another twist in this story.
The Blue Jackets have been circling around Matt Duchene for months.
Obviously, they want him and Duchene clearly wants a change of scenery. Did you see those media day photos? Yikes. In the player's defense, he has probably assumed a new address since the trade deadline back in March. Colorado GM Joe Sakic has slow-played this almost to the death, and with a week until the season opener, one would think time is running out.
Elliotte Friedman has covered this story throughout the offseason and previously reported that the Blue Jackets may have been close to a deal in July. They have continued their pursuit into training camp, and at some point when the music stops, it would be hard to fathom them not having a chair to sit in. During an appearance on Edmonton's 630 CHED radio, Friedman updated the situation and said there could be two variables at play.
It's quiet now, he said, but could that be indicative of what's to come? Duchene would likely welcome a resolution to his situation before the season begins.
“I still think Columbus is very, very much in it. I think that they have made it very clear he’s a guy they want and I don’t think they’re far away."
With some uncertainty at center ice (Brandon Dubinsky is expected to play tomorrow in Pittsburgh, marking his preseason debut) and after losing a big chunk of depth scoring this summer, the Blue Jackets would benefit greatly by adding a player of Duchene's caliber.
