Severson, 29, has three goals and five assists for a total of eight points in 19 games this season. The three goals leads all defenseman on the Blue Jackets, while the eight points ranks 6th on the team and third amongst defensemen.
At just under 21 minutes per game, Severson ranks third on the team in average time on ice, behind defensemen Zach Werenski and Ivan Provorov. He had most recently been paired with the latter as a part of Columbus' second defensive pairing.
The club did not immediately announce a move to call up a defenseman in Severson's place. Even with his absence, the Blue Jackets still have seven defenseman on the active roster: Werenski, Provorov, Erik Gudbranson, David Jiricek, Adam Boqvist, Jake Bean, and Andrew Peeke.
The Blue Jackets also announced Tuesday that they loaned forward Trey Fix-Wolansky to the Cleveland Monsters. The 24-year-old winger played in just one game thus far for Columbus this season.
