Laine, who scored the first goal in Thursday's contest, has posted 6-3--9 in 18 games this season. He's already missed 12 games with a concussion and an illness after missing 53 games between the prior two seasons.
If he's out six weeks from Thursday, that sets his return date at January 25, meaning he'll miss the team's next 15 games.
Laine joins Adam Boqvist (shoulder strain, four weeks), Jack Roslovic (ankle, four to six weeks), Damon Severson (oblique, six weeks), and Boone Jenner (jaw, six weeks) as players who are out for significant time due to injuries.
The Blue Jackets host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
