The Columbus Blue Jackets wanted to be physical against the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
Matt Calvert's play in the closing seconds of Friday's 4–1 loss to the Penguins win is probably not what they imagined, however.
Calvert's rampage started with a quick scrap against Pittsburgh goon Tom Sestito during a faceoff. He quickly made his way over to cross-check Carter Rowney before the finale, in which Calvert broke his stick across the back of Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl.
Calvert was awarded a two-minute minor for cross-checking, but can expect to hear from the NHL about further punishment.
Told #CBJ Matt Calvert's crosscheck on #Pens Tom Kuhnhackl has been flagged for review by #NHL. Possible supplemental discipline.

The precedent is out there – a year ago, Brandon Dubinsky received a one-game suspension for breaking his stick across Sidney Crosby's back.
