Blue Jackets Erase 3-0 First-Period Deficit But Squander Late Lead In 5-4 OT Loss To Panthers

After allowing three goals in the first 6:51 of regulation, the Blue Jackets rallied back to take the lead before squandering it late and falling in overtime, 5-4 to the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena on Monday night.

1st Period

Ryan Lomberg capitalized on Elvis Merzlikins being out of position and banked the puck off his back from the left goal line to open the scoring at 2:19.

After a failed clearance, Gustav Forsling doubled the Florida lead with a left-point slapshot through traffic at 3:09.

Aleksander Barkov added to the Panthers' advantage at 6:09 when he maneuvered around Zach Werenski and Damon Severson to bury a rebound from the right doorstep. After the goal, Merzlikins was replaced by Spencer Martin after allowing three goals on 11 shots.

Sean Kuraly got the Jackets on the board at 15:41, finishing off a rebound from Erik Gudbranson's right-point slapshot.

Boone Jenner cut the Florida lead to one at 18:51 when he fired a right-circle wrist shot on a three-on-one rush past Sergei Bobrovsky. 

The Panthers took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission along with a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal.

2nd Period

Matthew Tkachuk nearly doubled Florida's lead at 2:45 with a right-circle wrist shot, but it hit the post, keeping the score 3-2. 

Kirill Marchenko tied the game on the power play at 10:02, dispatching Provorov's left-point wrist shot that got through Bobrovsky's pads.

The teams were tied at three after two periods with Florida taking a 33-17 advantage in shots on goal into the third period.

3rd Period

Cole Sillinger had a great chance to give the Jackets the lead at 6:33 with a shot from the goal mouth, but Bobrovsky made the save.

Alexandre Texier scored his first NHL goal since January 1, 2022, at 12:30 after his centering pass deflected off a defender and the right post before he finished the play on an open net.

The Panthers tied the game when Nick Cousins capitalized on Provorov's failed clearance at 19:04 with a wrist shot from the slot past Martin.

The teams were tied at four after regulation with the Panthers leading 46-22 in shots on goal.

Overtime

Carter Verhaeghe ended the game at 1:25, finishing a rebound from the left doorstep.

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 4-5-3.

Patrik Laine remains on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct. 20 with an upper-body injury.
