Just win, baby.
Adam Fantiili scored twice and Jet Greaves made 22 saves for his first career shutout as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Keeping Things Interesting
We've talked plenty about the Blue Jackets starts of late.
When things are going right and Dean Evason's club is on its game, the Blue Jackets are tough to beat.
In a Saturday matinee against the league-best Capitals, Zach Werenski made sure that's how the day would go.
One minute into the first period, Werenski (21) scored his first goal in 18 games to continue a three-game point streak (one goal, two assists). It's his first goal since Feb. 22 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Sean Monahan (34) extended his three-game point streak (two goals, two assists) with an assist. Dante Fabbro added his 17th assist.
With the goal, Werenski broke his own record set last year for most goals by a defenseman in Blue Jackets history. He also picked up his 77th point, the fourth-best point season in franchise history.
Columbus goal!

Scored by Zach Werenski with 19:00 remaining in the 1st period.
Assisted by Sean Monahan.

That's Zach Werenski's 21st goal of the season. He previously had tied his own #CBJ record for goals by a defenseman in a season; now he owns it all alone.
— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) April 12, 2025
His 21-56-77 totals are all now CBJ records alone for a defenseman in a campaign.
It didn’t take long to continue the scoring theme.
Kent Johnson (23) scored at 4:45 to give Columbus the 2-0 lead with James van Riemsdyk getting his 17th assist. Johnson is on a three-game point streak (one goal, four assists).

A third goal was taken away after Denton Mateychuk's shot along the boards went directly off an official's skate and into a wide-open net as Shepard anticipated the puck around the boards.
#CBJ Mateychuk tries to fire the puck into the offensive zone, and #ALLCaps Shepard leaves his net in anticipation of the rim-around. The puck glances off the skate of a linesman and caroms into the net.

No goal.
Poor Hunter Shepard comes up from the AHL and has to face point-blank chances from Zach Werenski and Kent Johnson in the first five minutes, then sees one go in off a ref. Last one didn't count, but that can't be good for the confidence.

Adam Fantilli's Legacy Moment
Adam Fantilli has done many great things to begin his NHL career. Earlier this week, the 20-year-old became the first player from his draft class to score 25 goals in a season.
In January, he recorded his first career hat trick in Toronto, an hour from his hometown of Nobleton. Fantilli recorded his second hat trick at Madison Square Garden in March.
On Saturday, in front of a nationally televised audience, Fantilli had himself a legacy moment.
Scoring twice to help lead the Jackets past the Capitals, his first-period goal started at one end, beginning with a nice, clean hit on standout rookie Ryan Leonard, who was playing in his sixth career game. On the same shift, just moments later, Fantilli scored at the other end at 19:24 for his 26th.

Kent Johnson (32) and van Riemsdyk (18) each picked up their second assists of the day. All part of the same sequence following the goal and hit on Leonard, Tom Wilson was given a misconduct for abuse of officials as part of the fracas, and standing up for his teammate.
During the intermission on ABC, Mark Messier called Fantilli's shift, "The stuff that legends are made of."
In the second period at 2:01, Fantilli scored his second of the game, 27th of the season, with Mateychuk getting his ninth assist.
Here's a goal. There have been a lot.

This one made it 4-0 #CBJ and was Fantilli's second of the game. It's now 6-0, so if goal videos are your thing, stick around.pic.twitter.com/RPtPFPhwnv
With his two goals, Adam Fantilli has reached 50 points on the season for the first time.
— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) April 12, 2025
He's the fifth #CBJ player to 50 (Werenski, Marchenko, Johnson, Monahan), tying a team record for a season.
Powder Keg
Alex Ovechkin did not travel for Saturday’s game as the Caps get set for the playoffs. Jakob Chychrun missed his second straight game due to illness. Hunter Shepard started in goal, making his fifth career start and first this season. Jake Christiansen missed the game for Columbus due to an upper-body injury suffered on Thursday. Jordan Harris played for the first time since Feb. 8.
The #ALLCAPS come to Nationwide a bit shorthanded -- without notable names Alex Ovechkin, Aliaksei Protas, Jacob Chychrun and Logan Thompson.
— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) April 12, 2025
Hunter Shepard gets the call in net for just his fifth career NHL game.
Saturday's 7-0 loss was Washington's most lopsided defeat all season. As you would expect in such a game with the score out of hand, it was only a matter of time before the fireworks really got started.
Leonard, who was observed for a concussion after the hit by Fantilli, lost a fight against Sean Kuraly in the second period. Kuraly had to get his hands patched up, but returned. Then van Riemsdyk got into it with Rasmus Sandin.

Saturday's game had 76 combined penalty minutes between the two clubs. With the rematch set for Sunday and lineup regulars, including Ovechkin, expected to play, Sunday's game figures to have even more spice. It helps that the Jackets are still alive in the playoff race following the Montreal Canadiens' 1-0 overtime loss Saturday night to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Blue Jackets have now scored either 0 goals or 6+ goals in over 30% of their games this season

#CBJ Voronkov was, apparently, given a 10-minute misconduct for his part in that Dubois fracas. Clearly word didn't get to #CBJ. He was just on the ice for the power play.
— Aaron Portzline (@Aportzline) April 12, 2025
Officials noticed at 12:10 of the third. He's been ejected from the game, and #CBJ get a two-minute minor.
Not to be lost in the craziness of the game was Greaves' performance. Making his second consecutive start, and third in the last four days, including Wednesday's start for the Cleveland Monsters, Greaves rose to the occasion once again with his first shutout.
A fitting stat on 5th Line Celebration: #CBJ reached 55 points at home this season today, tied for the second most in franchise history. Can match the record of 57 set in 2016-17 with a win in the home finale Thursday vs. the Islanders.
— Jeff Svoboda (@JacketsInsider) April 12, 2025
Meanwhile, Monahan, Cole Sillinger, and van Riemsdyk also scored in the game. Monanan's 19th made it 5-0 with Kirill Marchenko (41) getting the assist at 4:37 of the second period.
#CBJ went up 5-0 (it's now 6-0) on Sean Monahan's 19th goal of the season. He's just one away from becoming the sixth Blue Jacket to reach the 20-goal mark this season.pic.twitter.com/qzrYXBuhP9

Sillinger's 10th at 5:14 of the middle frame made it 6-0 with Voronkov getting his 24th helper.

van Riemsdyk completed the Gordie Howe hat trick with his 16th goal, and Mathieu Olivier got his 14th assist. The 16 goals are van Riemsdyk's most since scoring 24 for the Philadelphia Flyers in 2021-22.

#CBJ coach Dean Evason asked if he thinks there will be some carry over in tomorrows meeting with the Caps said:, I hope so. Saying essentially his team needs to play with that same bite, that same edge.
— Dave Maetzold (@DMaetzMedia) April 12, 2025
Shepard made 19 saves on 26 shots. The Blue Jackets lead the NHL with 189 5v5 goals, passing the Capitals (187).
Most goals in a season by the #CBJ:
— 1st Ohio Battery (@1stOhioBattery) April 12, 2025
1) 258 (2021-22)
2) 256 (2018-19)
3) 253 (this season, including the six so far today)
The Blue Jackets' seven goals against the Capitals are the most goals against them in Nationwide Arena, surpassing the previous high of five goals.
#CBJ lead the Capitals 6-0 after two periods of play. Columbus also leads in shots 16-11.
— CBJ Public Relations (@BlueJacketsPR) April 12, 2025
The six goals scored by the Jackets are the most tallied against the Capitals at Nationwide Arena in franchise history (prev. 5 - 4x, 2/26/18 most recent, 5-1 W).
van Riemsdyk (1-2-3) gets the Gordie Howe hat trick, the second of his career, and #CBJ lead 7-0 over the Capitals. Assist to Olivier.
— CBJ Public Relations (@BlueJacketsPR) April 12, 2025
The seven goals ties the franchise record for the most even scored against the Capitals (3/21/23, 7-6 OTW at WSH).
To The Capital
The Blue Jackets conclude their weekend home-and-home series with the Capitals on Sunday, April 13, at 6 p.m. ET from Capital One Arena. The Blue Jackets are 1-10-0 in the second of back-to-back games this season.
