It feels like ages ago when R.J. Umberger requested a trade from the Blue Jackets, doesn't it?
That was after the 2013-14 season and the Blue Jackets' six-game playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Umberger was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Scott Hartnell (who was recently bought out by Columbus), but a return to Philadelphia did not work out for Umberger, who began his NHL career there.
The Flyers bought out the final year of Umberger's contract last summer, and he's been on the free agent market ever since. Announced Friday by the Dallas Stars, Umberger will attend their training camp on a tryout basis, attempting to make a comeback at age 35 and having not played an NHL game since the 2015-16 season.
Umberger is - at least for training camp - reunited with Ken Hitchcock, his coach in Columbus and now back for a second tour of duty as head coach of the Stars.
