The coaching carousel is greasing its wheels.

The Dallas Stars have reportedly filled their vacancy with Denver University head coach Jim Montgomery. Calgary hired Bill Peters after he parted ways with Carolina. The Hurricanes' search rolls on and the New York Rangers, accustomed to being in the headlines, have been rather quiet.

Many have mentioned the name of Boston University coach David Quinn, also coach of the U.S. National Junior Team this coming year, as a favorite for the Rangers job. According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Quinn has told friends he's staying with the Terriers and will not pursue New York's opening.

Brooks lists a few potential candidates, one of them being Blue Jackets assistant Brad Shaw. Shaw just completed his second season with the Blue Jackets after departing the St. Louis Blues organization, and he has extensive coaching experience as an assistant at the NHL level. He briefly served as interim coach of the New York Islanders in 2006.

From Brooks:

The Blueshirts would have interest in Columbus assistant Brad Shaw, but it is uncertain whether the Jackets would grant permission to talk to John Tortorella’s heir apparent.

It's interesting that Brooks, who has known Tortorella for years, lists Shaw as the "heir apparent" in Columbus. Before joining the Blue Jackets, Shaw interviewed for the Ottawa Senators coaching job that went to Guy Boucher two summers ago.
