Blue Jackets Shut Out At Home For Second Time This Season, Fall 2-0 To Islanders

While Spencer Martin saved 31 of 33 shots, Semyon Varlamov stopped all 35 shots he faced as the Islanders beat the Blue Jackets 2-0 at Nationwide Arena on Saturday.

1st Period

Simon Holmstrom nearly opened the scoring from the right doorstep after a David Jiricek turnover below the goal line at 6:46, but Jackets goalie Martin made the save. 

After an offensive-zone takeaway at 9:15, Adam Fantilli had two key chances from the slot at 9:34 and 9:37, respectively, but Islanders goalie Varlamov stopped both shots. 

New York's Kyle Palmieri opened the scoring at 15:45 when he capitalized on a rebound from the bottom of the left circle. 

Jack Roslovic had a golden opportunity to tie the game at 17:38 with a one-timer from the left circle, but Varlamov was there for the save. 

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 14-11 advantage in shots on goal into the second period. 

2nd Period

Boone Jenner received a fantastic feed from Johnny Gaudreau in the low slot at 1:53, but Varlamov was there to make the save.  

The Islanders went to the power play at 11:13, and had some great chances including three shots on goal, but Martin stood tall.

The teams continued to trade chances, but neither squad could score, so New York took a 1-0 lead into the final period along with a 23-18 edge in shots on goal.

3rd Period

Roslovic three more close calls in the third period, being robbed by the glove of Varlamov from the right circle at 6:43 before hitting the post on the power play from the slot at 8:26 and being denied by Varlamov from the same spot at 9:05.

Matt Martin doubled the Islanders' lead at 16:39, capitalizing on a rebound from the left doorstep. 

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 3-3-2.

Injury Update

Patrik Laine remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury and is currently on injured reserve. He has been eligible to be activated off the IR at any time since Friday.

The Blue Jackets will hit the road and travel to Dallas to face the Stars on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
