Boom.

The Columbus Blue Jackets upgraded at center Monday, signing free agent Sean Monahan to a five-year contract worth a total of $27.5 million.

The average annual value is $5.5 million.

While primarily a center, the 30-year-old can also play either side of the wing and has proven to be a versatile commodity in his 11-year NHL career. Monahan spent the 2023-24 season with the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets, where he played in 83 regular season games and had a total of 26 goals and 33 assists. He won 55% of his face-offs, the second consecutive season in which he hit that mark.

Monahan was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. In 764 career games, he has 244 goals and 294 assists for a total of 538 points. He's also tallied 10 goals and added 12 assists in a total of 35 career postseason games.

The signing reunites Monahan with Johnny Gaudreau. The two spent nine seasons together with the Calgary Flames, much of that time as linemates. Both players had career highs in goals, assists, and points while playing alongside each other and with Monday's free agent signing – the first of GM Don Waddell's tenure in Columbus – they're back together again in central Ohio.
