It's not every day you see an NHL team bench its captain in the middle of a competitive game, but that's exactly what happened in the second period of tonight's game between the Blue Jackets and Sharks.
Then again, it's not every day you see a captain and key contributor take a penalty like this.
That penalty came while the Jackets were already shorthanded, and at the tail end of the kill. It gave the Sharks a brief 5-on-3 power play, which they promptly scored on, and a nearly two-minute 5-on-4 power play afterwards.
Suffice to say, John Tortorella was not happy.
The Columbus Dispatch's George Richards points out that Foligno had one short shift after that in the second, and spent the rest of the period planted on the pine. He didn't come back until mid-way through the third period.
While Foligno was on the bench, the game went from a 1-1 tie to a 3-1 Sharks lead.
