Cole Sillinger's Second-Career Hat Trick Not Enough As Blue Jackets Lose 4-3 In Overtime To Wild

Cole Sillinger posted his second-career hat trick and Daniil Tarasov made 33 saves as the Blue Jackets lost to the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime on Saturday at Nationwide Arena.

1st Period

Sillinger opened the scoring at 8:09 when he finished a great feed from Jake Bean at the right doorstep.

Matt Boldy tied the game on the power play with a right-circle one-timer that snuck through the pads of Blue Jackets goalie Tarasov at 14:48.

The teams were tied at one after one with Minnesota taking an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal into the second period.

2nd Period

Sillinger scored his second of the game at 0:17, beating Marc-Andre Fleury to the high-glove side thanks to a sweet backhand feed from Kirill Marchenko.

Boldy answered with his second power-play goal of the night at 10:15, scoring with a backhand shot from the slot.

The clubs headed to the third period tied at two with Minnesota outshooting Columbus 22-17. 

3rd Period

The Wild went on the power play at 1:42 and posted two shots on goal but weren't able to score the go-ahead goal.

Sillinger completed his hat trick at 14:15 on the power play with a net-front deflection from Adam Boqvist's shot from the point.

After Justin Danforth missed an open net and a neutral-zone turnover by Ivan Provorov, Marcus Johansson beat Tarasov with a backhand shot to tie the game at 18:28.

The teams were tied at three headed into overtime with Minnesota outshooting Columbus 35-25.

Overtime

Fleury robbed Yegor Chinakhov's game-winning attempt from the right circle at 2:49.

Marco Rossi won the game at 3:05 with a right-circle one-timer.

With the loss, the Blue Jackets fell to 13-19-9.

  • Adam Boqvist returned to the lineup after a 13-game absence due to a shoulder strain.
  • Zach Werenski was placed on IR with an ankle injury suffered on Dec. 27 and is out 4-6 weeks.
  • Sean Kuraly was placed on IR retroactive to Dec. 23 and is expected to miss at least two weeks with an abdominal injury.
  • Nick Blankenburg was placed on IR retroactive to Dec. 19 with an upper-body injury. He's listed as day-to-day.
  • Patrik Laine is expected to miss six weeks with a clavicle fracture suffered on Dec. 15 and is on IR retroactive to Dec. 14.
  • Boone Jenner is on IR and is expected to miss six weeks with a broken jaw he suffered on Dec. 8.

The Blue Jackets will travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Ohio.
