Blue Jackets Winning Streak Over at Two, Tarasov Injured In 3-2 Loss To Islanders

Noah Dobson scored in the third period to help the New York Islanders over the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 on Thursday at Nationwide Arena for their third straight win.

The loss snaps the Blue Jackets' two-game winning streak.

Kyle Palmieri had two points with a goal and an assist. Pierre Engvall and Bo Horvat scored for the Islanders. Horvat is on a three-game point streak (three goals, zero assists).

Mathew Barzal and Alexander Romanov each had two assists. Ryan Pulock had an assist. Barzal is on a three-game point streak (zero goals, four assists).

Ilya Sorokin improved to 5-0-2 in his career against Columbus with 22 saves. It was his only start of the season versus Columbus.

Kirill Marchenko had two points with a goal and an assist to continue a three-game point streak (three goals, two assists).

Dmitri Voronkov scored for Columbus.

Alexandre Texier, Zach Werenski, and Cole Sillinger had assists. Cole Sillinger is on a four-game point streak (two goals, three assists).

Daniil Tarasov made 13 saves on 15 shots and left the game in the first period due to an upper-body injury after a collision with David Jiricek. Jet Greaves came on in relief and made 24 saves.

The Blue Jackets came into Thursday's affair on a two-game winning streak after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Saturday in a shootout and winning 4-1 over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.

The Islanders came in on a two-game winning streak after beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Monday in overtime and defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Tuesday. They entered action one point out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

Johnny Gaudreau missed his first game of the season due to illness. Trey Fix-Wolansky was brought up on an emergency recall. Ivan Provorov is the only Blue Jacket to play in every game this season.

1st Period

Engvall scored his ninth of the season for the Islanders with six seconds remaining on the power play at 7:53. Pulock and Palmieri added the assists.

The tally snapped the Blue Jackets' streak of seven games in a row in which they scored first.

Columbus countered with a power-play goal of their own at 9:45 when Voronkov scored his 18th to snap a 12-game goalless drought. Marchenko and Texier had the assists. The goal places Voronkov third among rookies in franchise history (Marchenko had 21 in 2022-23 and Pierre-Luc Dubois had 20 in 2017-18).

At 13:48, the Islanders regained the lead on Hovat's 32nd. Barzal and Romanov picked up the assists on the play.

The back-and-forth affair continued when Marchenko scored his 21st of the season at 17:22 to tie his career high. The goal came from behind Sorokin as Marchenko flipped the puck off his mask. Werenski and Sillinger added the helpers.

Both teams scored on their only power-play chances. The Islanders had an 18-10 shot advantage.

2nd Period

There was no score in the second period. New York was 0-for-1 on the power play in that frame. New York outshot Columbus 14-6 in the period and had a 32-15 advantage in the game.

3rd Period

Dobson scored his ninth of the year at 3:21 to give the Islanders the 3-2 lead. Barzal and Romanov each picked up their second assist.

The Blue Jackets pulled the goalie with over three minutes left, and Palmieri scored the empty net goal at 19:22 for his 25th of the season.

Jake Bean left the game in the third period after blocking a shot. The Islanders were 0-for-1 on the power play. Columbus outshot New York 12-9 in the period. New York swept the season series 3-0-0.

  • Yegor Chinakhov is day-to-day with an upper-body injury he suffered on Mar. 12 against the Canadiens. 
  • Elvis Merzlikins is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. 
  • Kent Johnson has been placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. He underwent successful surgery on Mar. 7 and is expected to make a full recovery in six months.
  • Patrik Laine entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Jan. 28 and will be away from the team indefinitely.
  • Adam Fantilli suffered a calf laceration on Jan. 28 and is expected to miss eight weeks.
