CBJ GOALS: |
For the first time in five years, the Columbus Blue Jackets have won five games in a row.
Zach Werenski scored early and late in regulation and Daniil Tarasov was perfect in overtime and the shootout as the Blue Jackets defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night.
After the Flyers connected on a goal in the opening minutes of the game, Werenski brought it back to even with his 14th goal of the season.
The game would remain tied at 1-1 until the middle of the third period, when the Flyers would regain the lead on an Owen Tippett goal.
With just under five minutes remaining in the game and the Blue Jackets on the verge of seeing their season-long winning streak snapped, they would again get a goal from Werenski. This one tied the game at 2-2 and brought an otherwise quiet Nationwide Arena crowd to its feet.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game would go into a shootout. Both Johnson and Marchenko scored on their shootout attempts, with Marchenko's poke goal ending the game.
Daniil Tarasov stopped 23 of 25 shots for his first win with the Blue Jackets since late October. The two goals allowed was tied for the fewest by Tarasov this season in his now 11 starts.
Here's how it all went down as the Blue Jackets defeated the Flyers for the first time this season:
1st Period:
(3:44 — PHI Goal): It doesn't long for the Flyers to strike first as less than four minutes into the game, Bobby Brink picks up his fifth goal of the season. The Blue Jackets have a spot of trouble getting the puck out of their own zone and Brink tips in the pass from Nick Seeler to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
(10:27 — CBJ Goal): Is there anything Werenski can't do? This goal comes in breakaway fashion for Z, a rare one for the Norris-candidate defenseman. The sequence starts with a takeaway from Werenski and he uses his momentum to gain space between him and the chasing Flyers. He beats Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov stick-side to the game at 1-1.

2nd Period
No goals in the second period and no save-of-the-night candidates, but a good dust-up between Mathieu Olivier and Travis Konecny following Olivier's clean, but heavy, hit on Travis Sanheim. The Blue Jackets would get a power play out of it but come away empty handed. Columbus had 21 of the 35 shot attempts in the middle frame and five of the eight high-danger chances. Shots on goal were an even 9-9.

3rd Period
(8:13 — PHI Goal): A low-danger shot from Tippett finds its way into the back of the Columbus net with just under 12 minutes left in regulation to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.
(15:23 — CBJ Goal): No, seriously: is there anything Werenski can't do? The game-tying goal comes with Werenski and Marchenko on a 2-on-1. Marchenko has the option to shoot it to Fedotov's right but sees him leaning and instead gets it over to Werenski, who had no problem getting it in the net to make it a 2-2 game.

Overtime/Shootout:
A relatively even overtime period didn't solve anything, so it was on to a shootout. Johnson scored first, with Konecny hitting the crossbar on the Flyers' first attempt. After an Adam Fantilli attempt was saved, Tarasov came up big against fellow countryman Matvei Michkov. With the game up to Marchenko, he pulls out a nifty move similar to one used by Alexandre Texier in a shootout several seasons back and pokes it past Fedotov to give the Blue Jackets the victory.

Werenski's 17th straight home game with a point tied Ray Bourque for the longest such streak by a defenseman in the NHL. Bourque accomplished that in the 1992-93 season, so we're at a 30+ year occurrence for Werenski right now. The all-time record is Bobby Orr, who had 25 straight at home for the Bruins in the 1974-75 season.
- The Blue Jackets are now 15-5-3 at home this season. Only the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs, both with 17, have more home-ice victories.
Up Next:
It's another home game for the Blue Jackets as they'll face the San Jose Sharks at 7 p.m. Thursday night. It will be Macklin Celebrini's first visit to Nationwide Arena.
